1. India Open (Super 750) – Goh Sze Fei & Nur Izzuddin Conquer!
This was a major highlight for Malaysia! Our men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, delivered a stunning performance, defeating the top Korean pair Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae 21–15, 13–21, 21–16 in the final on January 19. This Super 750 title is a massive boost for their season!
2. Indonesia Masters (Super 500) – Man/Tee’s First Super 500!
The action continued in Jakarta from January 21-26, where Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun secured a phenomenal victory in the men’s doubles, beating the formidable Indonesian pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto 21–11, 21–19. This marks their second Super 500 title of the year!
3. Badminton Asia Championships – Aaron/Wooi Yik are ASIAN CHAMPIONS!
In Ningbo, China (April 8-13), Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik captivated fans by clinching the Men’s Doubles title, defeating China’s Chen Boyang / Liu Yi 21–19, 21–17. This is a HUGE win and a testament to their unwavering dedication!
4. Sudirman Cup Finals – A Valiant Malaysian Effort
The prestigious World Mixed Team Championships (April 27 – May 4) in Xiamen, China, saw Malaysia battle hard. While the team’s dream of reaching the semi-finals was shattered by a strong China, falling 0-3 in the quarter-finals, our players like Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei and Leong Jun Hao showed immense fighting spirit against world-class opponents.
5. Taipei Open (Super 300) – Loh Kean Yew’s Brilliance!
While not a Malaysian national player, Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, a fan favourite in Southeast Asia, secured the men’s singles title from May 6-11, overcoming Chou Tien-chen 21–14, 15–21, 22–20. A fantastic performance from a regional star!
6. Thailand Open (Super 500) – Aaron/Wooi Yik Win Again!
Our dynamic duo, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, continued their red-hot form, winning another Super 500 title in Bangkok from May 13-18. They defeated William Kryger Boe/Christian Faust Kjær of Denmark 20–22, 21–17, 21–12! Their consistent winning ways are truly impressive.
7. PERODUA Malaysia Masters (Super 500) – An ALL-MALAYSIAN Final!
The Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur witnessed a historic moment from May 20-25! In an all-Malaysian men’s doubles final, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun once again triumphed, defeating compatriots and former world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21–12, 15–21, 21–16.
8. Singapore Open (Super 750) – Aaron/Wooi Yik Seal Third Title!
Fresh off the Malaysia Masters, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik continued their incredible run, winning the men’s doubles title in Singapore from May 27 – June 1. They defeated Korea’s Kim Won-ho/Seo Seung-jae 15–21, 21–18, 21–19. Their third title of the year highlights their consistent world-beating form!
Global Highlights & Key BWF Announcements
Beyond the Malaysian triumphs, the global badminton scene has also seen some major developments:
- An Se-young and Viktor Axelsen dominate early: South Korea’s An Se-young and Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen have shown strong form, clinching multiple singles titles at the beginning of the year, including the Malaysia Open and India Open.
- Spin Serve Permanently Banned: The BWF has confirmed the permanent ban on the spin serve, ensuring fair play and focusing on traditional skills.
- New BWF Leadership: Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul has been confirmed as the new BWF President, guiding the sport forward for the next four years.
